Jewel-Osco in Bensenville donated 38,000 cans of garbanzo beans to the food bank. This donation will provide an estimated 35,000 meals to those in need. Jewel-Osco has donated to the food bank for 30 years. Last year they donated a total of 14 million pounds of food.[1]
Northern Illinois Food Bank opened a new distribution center in Joliet in May of 2018. This distribution center will serve Will county and is estimated to increasing its capacity by 1 million meals a day. There are currently More than 50,000 people in Will County that need food assistance and 26,000 are children.[2]
More than 200 volunteers came to help compile 9,000 boxes at the Geneva warehouse as part of the Northern Illinois Food Bank annual Holiday Meal Box plan. Companies such as Tyson foods, Kellogg's, Jewel-Osco, Bimbo Bakeries USA and The Jel-Sert Company came out to help assemble the boxes. [3]
In 2017 they partnered with employees at Partners Warehouse and Elwood Fire Department to provide 260 boxes of food to 2,000 people just before the holidays. [4]
Serve more than 71,000 people each week in 13 counties surrounding Chicago. They teamed up with Hillshire brands to enhance their IT. Focusing specifically in their inventory they developed strategies to measuring and maintaining quality food for their community.[5]
During the summer they have the program “meals in the move”. A truck with free meals serving children 18 years and under in 6 different locations in Aurora.[6]
Northern Illinois food bank sent mobile food pantries on July 12 2018 to Rosecrance Ware Center. There were 300 meals provided for people within the Rockford area. The alliance between the two began in January with the help of Rosecrance Recovery Coach Bonnie Gilmore.[7]
They also offered mobile pantries for everybody, not only children, on Oct 9th and 18th.[8]
Allstate partnered with 7 states to raise $24,000 to donate to Feeding America food banks which Northern Illinois Food Bank falls under. Allstate collected donations in April 2018 in an online food drive. Disaster relief food boxes were packed by Allstate volunteers and given to Northern Illinois Food Bank.[9]
Spartan Food Pantry opened for the first time October 3, 2018. It is located in Sycamore, Illinois in West Elementary School. It was created by Kristi Crawford and Atlee Mathews. Northern Illinois Food Bank worked with them to start a pilot program for the food pantry and continue to supply food every 2 weeks.[10]
Willow Creek Community Church's Care Center has their own food bank. In April 2018, they began a mobile pantry service built on the same model as Northern Illinois Food Bank.[11]
Charity Navigator rated Northern Illinois Food Bank with 4 stars and a score of 91.81%. 97% of the donations NIFB takes during the year go towards feeding those in need. They have received a 4 star rating since 2003.[12]
