I am Frances Ryan. I am a PhD researcher investigating the role of online information in reputation management at Edinburgh Napier University. My research interests include everyday life information seeking (ELIS), human information behaviour and use, social media use, social informatics, online information sharing, and online reputation and identity. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Central Washington University (Ellensburg, WA, USA) and a Master of Letters in Media and Culture (with distinction) from the University of Stirling (Scotland).
Professionally, I have more than 18 years’ experience in traditional and new media communication strategies. I have successfully created and directed strategic, proactive communication strategies for a range of organisations from small, non-profit community groups and family businesses to an internationally recognised research university (WSU).
I live in Edinburgh, Scotland and am originally from Cle Elum, Washington, USA. My free time is spent running, writing, reading, and exploring my local environs. I am also an occasional geocacher.
I maintain two blogs. The first, www.FrancesRyanPhD.com, is my research blog where I write about my research activities and related areas of interest. The second, www.JustFrances.com, is my personal blog where I write about my life, including my personal experiences with polycystic kidney disease and idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, and life as young(ish) widow.
