Clipperkayne Wins national Australian Barber battle

BARBER Kayne Thomas is only 21-years-old but he’s just taken out a national hair cutting competition and has his own barber shop.

The Oxenford local took out the Barber Konnect Australian Titles in Sydney on Sunday against competitors from all the eastern states.

Thomas said it was the second competition he had entered, after only finishing third in the Queensland Titles in July.

“They only take the top three from each state, so I just made it through,” he said.

“I think I had a lot more preparation and was a lot more focused.”

He said contestants had only 30 minutes to complete three haircut styles.

“There’s the slick-back or pompadour, the razor fades and designs,” he said.

The Auckland expat said he used hair models from the Gold Coast as his secret weapon.

“Your best bet in competitions is to use models who have coarse black hair – the haircuts look a lot better,” he said.

I brought along one of my best mates, another barber from my shop and a client who has great hair,” he said.

He said he was thankful his mother had helped him set up Mistys Barbershop.

“Mum’s a hairdresser, so it’s I’ve been doing it for about five minutes,” he said.

“I’m so thankful that moving to Australia has given me so many opportunities.

“My goals are to go to America and compete over there and expand my shop.

“I would like more barbers to become involved in these competitions.”
