Der Mummelsee ist im Westen, Norden und Osten von steilen, bewaldeten Berghängen gesäumt und hat einen Umfang von etwa 800 Metern. Nach Westen steigt das Seeufer zum Katzenkopf (1123 m ü. NHN) und nach Norden zur Hornisgrindean, dem mit 1163 Meter höchsten Berg des Nordschwarzwalds. Lediglich nach Süden sind die Ufer des Mummelsees (fast) flach, dort stehen das Berghotel Mummelsee und die nahegelegene St. Michaelskapelle.

GEOGRAPHY

The Mummelsee has a circumference of approximately 2625 ft (800 m) and is surrounded by steep and forested mountain slopes on its northern, western and eastern sides. The western lakeside elevates towards the mountain "Katzenkopf" (3684 ft or 1123 m above sea level) and the northern lakeshore rises towards "Hornisgrindean". With 3816 ft (1163 m) above sea level, "Hornisgrindean" is the highest mountain in the Northern Black Forest (Nordschwarzwald). Solely the southern banks of the lake are (nearly) flat. That is also the place where the alpine hotel "Mummelsee" and the close-by St. Michaels chapel are located.

NAME

Der Name des Mummelsees geht nach Angaben der Gemeinde Seebach zurück auf die weißen Seerosen (Nymphaea alba), im Volksmund Mummeln genannt, die dort früher zahlreich vorkamen^[4] (Allerdings wird auch die Gelbe Teichrose (Nuphar lutea) als Mummel bezeichnet). NAME

According to statements made by the town Seebach, the name of the Mummelsee derives from the (German) vernacular term "Mummeln" used for white waterlilies (Nymphaea alba). In the past, this species (of plant) could be found in large numbers in that area. (It should be noted that the yellow pond lily (Nuphar lutea) can also be called "Mummel"). The myth of the nix, which were also called "Mümmlein" (diminutive form of "Mummel"), possibly could have been the namesake of the lake as well. (Connected to this context, the white waterlily is also referred to as "Nixblume" meaning "nix flower").

GASTRONOMIE UND GEWERBE

Begünstigt durch den Verlauf der Schwarzwaldhochstraße wurde der See auch für den Tourismus interessant. Ein größeres Gebäude mit Hotel, zwei Restaurants, ein Lebensmittel- und Souvenirladen sowie ein Tretbootverleih befinden sich direkt neben dem großen Besucherparkplatz.

Das Hotelgebäude wurde am 5. Mai 2008 durch ein Feuer zum großen Teil zerstört.^[7] Ursache war vermutlich fahrlässige Brandstiftung.^[8] Das Hotel wurde nach dem Brand im Schwarzwaldstil wieder aufgebaut und am 26. März 2010 eröffnet, die Nutzfläche erhöhte sich von 2385 auf 3690 Quadratmeter.

GASTRONOMY/CUISINE AND TOURISM/BUSINESS

Favoured by the route of the "Schwarzwaldstrasse", the lake became a tourist destination. A bigger building, including the hotel, two restaurants, one grocery and souvenir store as well as a paddleboat rental, is located directly near the visitors' car park.

A great part of the hotel building burnt down on 5th May 2008. The fire was presumably a case of arson. After the incident, the hotel was rebuilt in the "Schwarzwaldstil" resulting in an increase of usable floor space from 25672 ft2 (2385 m2) to 39719 ft2 (3690 m2) and reopened on 26th March 2010.

• Grimmelshausen ließ seinen Simplicissimus von Unterwasserbewohnern in den See entführen und zum Mittelpunkt der Erde tauchen. • Once located in complete isolation and lacking any road connections, the lake is surrounded by quite a number of myths. As one legends tells, a nix lived in the lake, who bestowed the people with her guidance, danced, sang and played with them at night.
• These legends inspired Eduard Mörike to write the poem "Die Geister am Mummelsee" (The spirits at the Mummelsee).
• In his work of adventure fiction "Simplicissmus", Grimmelhausen used the lake and its inhabitants to tell about the dive to the centre of the earth. The described system of underwater pathways from the surface towards the centre of the earth might have been inspired by Plato's myth (about the soul's fate after death). (Dialog Phaidon 107d–115a)

MUMMELSEE-RUNDWEG UND KUNSTPFAD

Um den Mummelsee führte vormals ein weitgehend naturbelassener Rundweg, der trotz der hohen Frequentierung durch Besucher noch zahlreiche Engstellen aufwies und durch markante Baumwurzeln gekennzeichnet war. Im Jahre 2014 wurde er barrierefrei ausgebaut.^[10] Entlang des Wegs wurden vor einigen Jahren Kunstwerke moderner Künstler installiert.

TRAILS AROUND THE MUMMELSEE

Formerly, the naturally existing trail around the lake was kept in its original state. The route was still marked by several tight passages and obstructive tree roots, even though it was frequented by a considerable number of visitors. In 2014, the path was reconstructed with greater accessibility in mind. A few years ago, art work by modern artist was installed along the circular trail.

VERKEHRSANBINUNG

Parkplätze für die Besucher des Sees liegen am Südufer. Täglich fahren Wanderbusse bis Baden-Baden, Achern und Freudenstadt. Am Wochenende bestehen überdies Direktverbindungen bis Oppenau, einmal samstags und sonntags bis Offenburg. Auf allen Strecken gelten das Baden-Württemberg- und das Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket sowie Konus.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Visitors' parking spaces are located at the southern lake shore. Busses for hiking tourists drive to Baden-Baden, Achern and Freudenstadt on a daily basis. On weekends, there are also direct bus connections available to Oppenau and once on Saturday and Sunday each to Offenburg. The "Baden-Württemberg-Ticket", "Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket" and the "Konus-Ticket" (sold by the Deutsche Bahn and local bus companies) are valid to use on all these routes.
