Pedro Correia da Cunha (1440 — Lisboa, 1497), was a Portuguese nobleman who became the Second Captain of Porto Santo and First Captain of Graciosa Island in the Azores. His wife was Izeu Peresterelo, daughter of Bartolomeu Perestrelo and thus sister to Columbus's wife Filipa Moniz. Izeu Perestrelo was cousin to Ana de Mendonça, King John II's Mistress. Pedro Correia was a descendant of D. Payo Peres Correia, 17th Grandmaster of the Portuguese Military Order of Santiago. Pedro Correia purchased the Captaincy of Porto Santo in 1458 for 300,000 reais plus a perpetual yearly interest payment of 30,000 reais. In 1473 he was forced by turn over the Captaincy of Porto Santo due to a lawsuit broguht his brother-law, Bartolomeu Perestrelo "o Moço," who was underage when his mother sold the Captaincy.[1][2] Pedro Correia was also one of King John II's twenty five Royal Guards and is buried along with his wife in the Chapel of St. John at the Carmo Monastery in Lisbon.
