First Ladies of Disco (Print ISBN: 978-0-7864-7581-0; Ebook ISBN: 978-1-4766-0332-2) is a 268-page softbound book/e-book written by James Arena (Forewords by Gloria Gaynor and Claudja Barry, Afterword by Harry Wayne Casey - a.k.a. KC & The Sunshine Band) and published in 2013 by McFarland (North Carolina). The book features in-depth interviews with 32 female vocalists who had major song hits on the dance and pop charts during the disco era, including Martha Wash ("It's Raining Men"), Evelyn "Champagne" King ("Love Come Down"), Linda Clifford ("If My Friends Could See Me Now"), Anita Ward ("Ring My Bell") and the original Ritchie Family ("Best Disco In Town"). Shortly after the book's release, its author and several of its stars were invited to discuss the project on New York's Fox (Channel 5) morning show "Good Day New York". Critic Justin Kantor of Soultracks.com gave the book a positive review, listing it as "Highly Recommended" and calling it "...a riveting and detailed journey into the lives and careers of some of the most important women at the forefront of the height of an era." According to firstladiesofdiscoshow.com, Wash, King and Clifford, under the guidance of artistic and marketing director James Washington, joined forces in 2015 to form a group called First Ladies of Disco, inspired by the book. In January of 2016, McFarland Publishing announced the official release of James Arena's follow-up book to "First Ladies of Disco" called "Legends of Disco" (Print ISBN: 978-1-4766-6496-5; Ebook ISBN: 978-1-4766-2457-0), featuring interviews with 40 more stars from the disco era.
