Tribute Vision is the newest technological advancement in tribute technology. Based on the design of the night vision glasses, this design packs more features into the same small package. Given to all tributes during the setup, this device allows tributes to gain benefits on the battlefield directly related to feats of strength and demonstration of prowess, while utilizing a built in camera to give the Capitol and the onlookers a glimpse of the tributes' vision.
Introduction
editThe games traditionally have been a battle of wits, knowledge, strength, skill, and other traits that a human needs to survive on their own, but as time has gone on, the need to advance the games with technology grows ever more so. Tributes have been offered more advanced weaponry, given access to herbs and medication we've developed, and also come face-to-face with many of our creations. The next step The Capitol has decided to take is one that directly rewards those that can display these survival traits during the games, giving them an edge in further encounters.
Functions
editThe functionality of the glasses can be split into two groups, those that are for the Capitol's benefit, and those that benefit the Tributes.
Capitol Functionality
editTribute Vision provides a way for the Capitol to do three main functions: save on arena costs, influence tributes directly, and give sponsors another outlet to spend money on.
The glasses can save on costs by being able to stream information from the Capitol directly to the tributes, so arena domes no longer must be able to display images or video, or be able to provide sounds to the tributes. The glasses themselves can also be salvaged from deceased tributes to be recycled for future games. In addition, the build in camera and microphone inside of the glasses can be used to record what they see and say, reducing costs of outfitting the arena with as many cameras and recording devices as they currently use.
The glasses can provide the Capitol with control over the tributes through enticement via the reward system, functions can have their time shortened or removed, and may also be disabled at any time during the games to force tributes to continue without the glasses.
Finally, the glasses give the Capitol a source of almost free income, as sponsors can unlock features and purchase additional time for the tributes. Since these functions are not physical items that have innate value, the Capitol can generate more funds for little continuous cost.
Tribute Functionality
editThe glasses provide multiple functions that can be obtained either through sponsorship purchase or through demonstrating mental and physical prowess on the battlefield. Therefor, on the surface, the functionality of the glasses is limited only to what the tributes earn. To keep the games interesting, each function can only be used for a limited amount of time, and will lose time even when not in use (albeit at a much slower rate) to make sure stalling doesn't occur. Listed below is how each function works and a list of rewards for various actions.
Function | Usage |
---|---|
Night Vision | Enhances light sources, does not work in pure darkness and can blind user if used in front of bright light sources. |
Infrared Vision | Displays heat signatures of what the user is looking at. |
Animal tracker | Provides information of local animal population and helps direct the tribute towards (or away) from them. |
GPS | Reveals a map of the arena and displays general tribute locations. |
Plant ID | Displays relevant plant information, such as name, if it's toxic, whether or not it's edible, and other miscellaneous uses. |
Tribute ID | Display information on a given tribute, including their demonstrated tactics and proficiency in various skills. |
Water scanner | Alerts the user to contaminated water. |
Action | Possible Rewards |
---|---|
Killing a tribute | Their remaining time |
Indirect killing | Above and Plant ID or Water Scanner |
Tribute Sponsorship | Any |
Controlling the Cornucopia | GPS |
Destroying food stashes | Plant ID, Water scanner, Night Vision |
Catching or Killing an Animal | Night Vision, Animal Tracker |
Tracking an enemy tribute | Tribute ID |
How to Use
editTribute Vision has four buttons located on the side that provide dynamic functionality based on what the user is currently doing with the glasses. Two main buttons will allow the user to select available features for use, one will turn the current function on or off, and the final button will allow the user to switch between left eye, right eye, or both simultaneously. Tributes will be shown their functionality during the training days during the week prior to the games, and will also be fitted to a pair at this time.
The given training will just be the bare necessities, as the way the glasses are used could be far more valuable than they may seem at face value. An example would be a tribute that sets up traps may notice they were given extra time towards their animal tracking, and therefor one of their traps has caught something. Creative ways to exploit the glasses help provide an edge to those that can think outside the box.
