Shirehead
editShirehead is a British front post-punk band based in Montreal set up by Joni Butler. Drawing influence from the British indie / rock classics of the 70's / 80's blended with Joni's a strong strong views of anti-racism and everyday common taboos such as gambling.
From the depths of the East midlands 'Shires' England, Joni Butler remembers growing up in pubs surrounded by men in union jack suites, and vulgar displays of hate speech drenched with a alcoholic violence. Spending his formative years in the DIY punk scene - organising shows, engineering bands, and touring the world.
“During his formative years, Jonjo founded and played in a mix of renowned bands, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience from 'DIY' approach to booking tours/music/release and networking. His dedication to the craft led him to pursue a degree in sound engineering, which further fuelled his creativity. For a number of years, Jonjo worked as a studio producer within the hardcore/punk and emo scene, contributing to the growth and development of numerous projects.” Tom harris (Listeningspaces.xyz)
After 6 months of searching viciously on facebook groups, online forums and lurking at skateparks with an eye out he formed Shirehead's final line up consisting of Jeremy Tremblay (subriver records) on drums, Erik Kennedy (some luck) on synth/noise making, Dylan Paiement on bass, Diego González on guitar, and of course, Joni Butler on vocals/guitar.
Shirehead released their first EP ’97 PERCENT OF PEOPLE QUIT BEFORE THE JACKPOT’ on September 20th, 2024. With driving bass lines, distortion laden riffs and upbeat drums the EP reimagines the sonics of bands like Bloc Party and the Cure. Joni’s lyrics are instantly relatable, as he sings about his struggles with addiction, mental health, and bigotry. It’s an EP that reflects the growth of its songwriter, a testament to change.
