Iori Miyazawa is a Japanese novelist best known for his light novel series Otherside Picnic, which received an anime adaptation in 2021. He won a Sogen SF Short Story Prize in 2015 and the Seiun Award for Best Japanese Short Story in 2026.
Writing career

[edit]In October 2011, Miyazawa debuted with the light novel Boku no Maken ga, Urusai Ken ni Tsuite (僕の魔剣が、うるさい件について; lit. 'About my magic sword being so noisy').[1] Four volumes of the series were released in total, with the last one published in October 2012.[2]
In 2013, Miyazawa published the light novel U wa Uchū Yabai no U! (ウは宇宙ヤバイのウ！; lit. '"U" is for "Space is crazy!"')[a][3] He wrote a sequel to the work around twelve years later.[4] In June 2014, Miyazawa published the light novel Fuhon'i Nagara mo Mahōtsukai (不本意ながらも魔法使い; lit. 'A wizard, though unwillingly').[5][6]
Miyazawa was awarded the 2015 Sogen SF Short Story Prize for Kamigami no Nohō (神々の歩法; lit. 'The gait of the gods').[7] He was later invited as a judge for the 2024 edition of the awards.[8]
Otherside Picnic
[edit]In February 2017, Miyazawa published the yuri science fiction light novel Otherside Picnic under Hayakawa Publishing.[9] In total, as of July 2026, he has written ten books in the series, with the most recent being released in July 2025.[10]
A manga adaptation by Eita Mizuno began serialization in February 2018 in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan[11] Miyazawa wrote original short stories for the compiled releases.[12] As of July 2026, the series has been collected in tankōbon volumes.[13]
An anime adaptation by Liden Films and Felix Film aired from January to March 2021.[9][14] Miyazawa contributed to the scripts for episodes three and ten.[15]
Later works
[edit]In July 2018, Miyazawa published the yuri science fiction light novel Side-by-Side Dreamers, which received an English translation in 2019.[16][17] In February 2019, he wrote a lead short story for a special yuri edition of S-F Magazine[18][19] that was eventually reprinted twice.[20]
Miyazawa won the 2026 Seiun Award for Best Japanese Short Story for "Tokitoki Channel: How to Make Nonexistent Weather" (ときときチャンネル ない天気作ってみた, Tokitoki Channel Nai Tenki Tsukuttemita).[21]
Other activities
[edit]Miyazawa is part of Adventure Planning Service, a Japanese production company known for producing tabletop RPGs and board games. He authors worldbuilding materials as well as replay transcripts.[22]
