Assignment: Article Evaluation
editEverything within the article is relevant to the article topic. There was nothing within the article page that had distracted me from varenicline. As I was reading the article, I did not notice any opinions or bias within the article. The article remained neutral and informative. There were a few components within the article, however, that I believe could be expanded on. The history and pharmacokinetics section of the article are both very short and could be expanded on, as well as varenicline itself could be expanded on. The wording about the article is well written in a manner that would be easy for the public to understand, but I also think that it could expand a little more into the science. In the pharmacokinetics section of the article, I see that it mentions that the half life of varenicline is about 24 hours, however it does not have a citation attached to this half life information, and I am wandering where they got this information from and if it was reliable. I also noticed a few sources are from 2009, which may be a little out-dated, but perhaps not with the available amount of research and information. As I was looking at the talk page, I noticed a lot of dispute and people that do not agree with each other. I was also surprised to see them fighting in a manner that is not professional, but simply arguing and not talking it out so to say. The talk page seems very messy and disorganized and filled with disagreements. Cronkam (talk)Cronkam (talk)
Assignment:Add to an article
editAdd 1-2 sentences to a course-related article, and cite that statement to a reliable source, as you learned in the online training.
Original Sentence: Varenicline is a nicotinic receptor partial agonist—it stimulates nicotine receptors more weakly than nicotine itself does.
This sentence does not have any source attached to it, and it known if the information is reliable.
Changed to: According to Tashkin (2015) varenicline is a high-affinity partial agonist for the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtype (nACH) that leads to the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens when activated, and therefore, has the capacity to reduce the feelings of craving and withdrawal caused by smoking cessation.[1]
Assignment:Review the rules for medical topics
editAssignment and module completed.
Assignment: Look up 3-5 potential topics related to the course
edit1) Varenicline Article: Often used to help patents successfully stop smoking cessation, nurses can educate patients on this option and monitor for side effects and how to take the drug properly.
-Could add the nurses role of the use of varenicline into the page possibly, talking about patient education involved with this drug. -Could also add more about how varenicline works, the action and pharmacokinetics. - Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varenicline --The introduction of this article is lacking. There is not a lot of detail about varenicline and seems to vague. -Side Effects: Is a good section and mentions all of the side effects I have also found, however I could add more study results and sources for the information. -Pharmacokinetics: This section is very small and could use editing and more information. -History: Also a very small section lacking in information that I could add. -Does not have a purpose statement or transition statement.
2) Smoking Cessation Article
-In medications section, could add the choice of bupropion and talk about its mechanism of action, effects, and usefulness. -Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking_cessation
3) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
-Could add a few more risk factors into the introduction section. -Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_obstructive_pulmonary_disease
4) Hand Washing Article
-Could add more about the medical use of hand hygiene (more specific about how critical it is for health care workers to wash hands -Organization within this article is lacking. - Article does not mention any specific microorganism that may be found -Mention of consequences if health care workers hands are not washed -Incorporate studies on hand hygiene and how educational interventions can aid compliance - Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_washing#Techniques
Assignment:Improving an existing article and Finalize your topic / Find your sources
editIdentify what's missing from the current form of the article. Think back to the skills you learned while critiquing an article. Make notes for improvement in your sandbox.
Article: Hand Washing
Add:
1. Specific microorganisms found in health care settings and patient contact 2. Why it is important to wash hands, statics and rates of decrease in infections? 3. Use of education interventions in health care workers to increase compliance 4. How likely it is for a health care worker to pass on microorganisms to patients if hands are not washed. 5. When hand washing requires the use of soap and water, compared to only the use of hand sanitizer

Addition: Education interventions for health care workers on the importance of hand washing has been found to have significant results in improving compliance. In a prospective study conducted by Erkan et al., the frequency of hand washing by nurses significantly increased after having an education intervention, as well as knowledge about hand washing and quality of hand washing also increased significantly (Erkan et al., 2017). Education programs should be implanted into the heath care setting to help increase hand washing compliance in heath care workers.

Peer Review
editHello Mandy, I really like your topic on Hand Washing. Hand washing is such an important topic in the health care setting. I think education interventions would be a great topic to add to your article like you said. Adding in why it is so important to wash your hands as well would also be great to mention. I think talking about how hand hygiene is often missed could be beneficial as well. It could be because of lack of time, being too busy, forgetting due to distractions, or even not having a sanitizer dispenser near. Thanks for your great insight! -Milaina Palazzolo
Hello Milaina, Thank you for your input and advice! I think all your suggestions could provide excellent knowledge and I will try to incorporate those into my final draft. Thank you for the review! -Amanda Cronk

Assignment: Reflective Essay
editThe Wikipedia assignment has been an interesting experience I have not experienced before. Having almost no previous exposure with Wikipedia, this was changeling at first to learn how Wikipedia is run and created.
One of the first assignments of this project was to critique an article. I found these Wikipedia pages very hard to critique. The information on many pages does not appear to flow in a very organized fashion, likely because there are so many different thoughts from different contributors. There is a talk page with each Wikipedia page where editors many talk with each other. I found many of the people on this talk pages were very defensive and upset when people edited their work. However, I do believe the idea of having the talk page for contributors to talk to each other is a great source of communication when creating and editing a Wikipedia page. I had first approached the article critique as we had critiques our articles in research and in previous classes. I thought ahead of time at looking at the organization of the page, the reliability of sources, and the content of the page. Although the organization of the Wikipedia pages are not bad, I do not think they are perfect either. I thought it was almost scattered and random thoughts of people all cramming them together. It was hard to find what to add to an article, as I would be trying to add into another’s person thoughts, when their organization did not match what I would believe is organization.
My contributions to the article page I believe were valuable information to the pubic. I had touched on the types of bacteria found in both hospitalized patients, and also the health care staff. Seeing a list of certain bacteria’s makes the subject matter appear more realistic and urgent rather than just generally mentioning that germs are present. Also, I had also touched on the fact that adding in education programs in the health care setting allows for a higher compliance rate of hand washing among health care workers. Having knowledge that something as simple as a short education program can help increase compliance, leading to a decreased infection rate, could be very valuable in health care. I believe the article after I edited it made the matter more urgent by knowing the specific organism that may be passed if hand hygiene is not performed, and also included useful knowledge about education programs. However, shorty after I had made my contributions, my work was deleted off the page.
A few classmates of mine had made a peer review of my work before adding my work into the Wikipedia page. They all had good feedback that I took into consideration when editing before moving to the official Wikipedia page. I had a student agree that adding in education programs would be a great addition, as well as discussing the current low rates of compliance could also help improve this article. I agreed with what she had said and had attempted to make those additions.
I had received minimal feedback from other Wikipedia editors after my contributions were added to the main Wikipedia page. I had a comment made to please use secondary sources, as well as a post on my user page to a wiki educator that he had needed help teaching us students. I had tried to send him a thank you on Wikipedia that may or may not have worked and took his comments into consideration. Next time I will need to watch my sources more carefully and review Wikipedia’s rules and guidelines more than I had this time.
Overall, I did not enjoy Wikipedia. I thought many of the articles were disorganized and a cluster of different thoughts and views. I found it very hard to incorporate my ideas into someone else’s that I did not always agree with. Also, aside from content I found Wikipedia very hard to use. I am not familiar with Wikipedia and have never had to code anything before. I found myself using a large amount of time on only trying to figure out how to physically type and or add things onto the Wikipedia pages. Yet, this project was a new experience and allowed the use of critical thinking and the process of learning something new which is valuable. In the future, I would much rather do this project in the form of a paper and multiple drafts, or an online assignment and discussion bored on blackboard. I think other webpages created by health care professionals should be used to inform the public on important health care topics. Informing the public of health care topics is crucial and can help improve the lives of many. Personally finding information of health care decisions can lead to a greater sense of independence in the public, and therefore I believe should be acquired by professional health care providers and not Wikipedia.
