2012 Safety of Journalists new article content ...

The Newseum remembered 82 journalists who had died in 2012 as a result of their reporting or while reporting, which made it the fourth deadliest year for working journalists.[1][2] In the midst of a civil war, Syria was the deadliest country claiming between 39 and 28 journalists, and Somalia, also in a protracted civil war, followed with 12 of its journalists killed.[1][3] The Commonwealth Journalists Association, which tracks the 54 member states, reported that 22 journalists had been killed across the Commonwealth, including ten in Pakistan, five in India, three in Bangladesh, two in Nigeria, one in Tanzania and one more in Uganda.[4][5]

On World Press Freedom Day 2013, UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon said, "There is more that we can do, including greater protections through the rule of law. I urge all involved to do their utmost to translate the words of the plan into actions on the ground that will create a safer environment for the press."[6] And the International Press Institute announced that US-born and UK-based journalist Marie Colvin and Japanese journalist Mika Yamamoto would become their "World Press Freedom Heroes" of 2012.[6]

At the Newseum ceremony, controversy arose over the Newseum's initial decision to include the two Palestinian news providers who were killed in the Gaza Strip while working, Hassam Salama and Mahmoud al-Kumi, in its memorial service. Al Aqsa TV news channel is associated with Hamas.[7] The Newseum backed down after mulling over Hamas's designation as a terrorist organization.[3] The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee requested that the Newseum reconsider.[8]
