Jessamyn Stanley, (June 27, 1987 – ), an African American yoga teacher in Durham, North Carolina, United States of America. Jessamyn Stanley is known for her self-acceptance, body positivity awareness and teaching yoga.[1]
Personal
editJessamyn Stanley grew up in Durham, North Carolina where she has spent most of her life.[2] Stanley attended the University of North Carolina for undergraduate and later graduate school when she started her yoga practice.[3][4] She also has an Associates degree in Applied Science in Culinary Arts from the Art Institute Raleigh-Durham.[3] While she had been struggling with self-acceptance for years, it was not until she brought yoga into her everyday life, that she developed a true love for her body.[4][5]
Career
editJessamyn Stanley began her Bikram Yoga journey in Fall 2011. She purchased 1 month of unlimited yoga at a near by studio while attending graduate school.[6] She fell in love with the soul-awakening practice that also offered her physical exercise. As a college student, money was tight and she found that practicing at home was something she did often. Stanley completed her yoga teacher training in March 2015.[7] Jessamyn Stanley's Every Body Yoga book was published in April 2017.[8]
Notable works
editJessamyn Stanley has written a book called "Every Body Yoga: Let Go of Fear, Get on the Mat, Love Your Body." In this book, she talks about her experience with yoga and how it has impacted her life. Jessamyn Stanley was awarded The Shorty Award for being voted best in Healthy Living.[9]
Stanley has also served as an expert for the New York Times section called "Ask" where subscribers ask a question and a knowledgeable expert answers.[10]
Jessamyn Stanley advocates for body positivity and the practice of yoga as method to attain self-acceptance.Stanley practices yoga and has explained the impact it has had on her life. This is how she found that it was possible to love herself. She has grown physically and mentally during the past few years from her growing yoga practice.[8][11]

Awards
editIn 2016, Jessamyn Stanley received the Shorty Award. This was awarded to Stanley in the category of Healthy Living. She showed what it is like to live a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, that anyone can do yoga, and to always love your body.[9][13]
In 2017, Stanley was presented with a Disruptor Award by the Disruptor Foundation for innovations in a person's area of expertise.[14]
