Axle8 is a real-time digital location based service that allows its users to find things such as events and offers around them. Its users are able to do this through their mobile phone application Axle8. Axle8 is currently in a beta release being only available in Sydney, Australia for use on the Apple iPhone and related products.[1] Axle8 was founded in Sydney during 2009 by co-founders Jin Liew and Alfred Lo.[2] Axle8 officially launched v1.0 of their iPhone application late August 2010.[3]
Overview
editAxle8 is a mobile phone application that allows users to see events and offers (called Notices) within a set radius around them. Notices have a brief description of what the event or offer is about, where it is, and when it is. Users are able to interact with them by seeing their location on a map, sharing via social media (Facebook, Twitter), adding the event to their calendar, and finding directions from their current location to the Notices.
Axle8 currently only supports the iPhone but plans to support other popular phones such as Android and BlackBerry based phones. There are no set release dates for these other phones as of yet.[4]
History
editAxle8 announced its first content partner Local Sydney in August 2010. Local Sydney is providing Axle8 with 1000s of Notices per week consisting of happy hours, pool competitions, lunch specials and other bar and pub related events.[5]
Axle8 integrated Sydney polling booth locations for the 2010 Australian Federal Election into their system as Notices in August 2010. This data was provided by the Australian Electoral Commission's (AEC) website. Users unsure of voting locations were able to find polling booths the same way they could find other events through Axle8.[6]
