I started this project as a good "new to Wikipedia" project that I stumbled across. This is mostly for me to keep track of what I'm doing, but if anyone wants to grab some red links or work on updating NAS members in subfields I've yet to work on, this will hopefully help you out!

Project started: 27 September 2024

Overview

edit

Copied (nearly word for word) text from my original post on the NAS member talk page:

For each sublist, I'm adding deceased members too, but adding (d. <YEAR>) next to their names. As the description for any of these no longer includes "only living members", it seems to be a somewhat silent consensus that deceased members are ok on the lists. As this info never changes, it will involve much less work to keep lists up to date as time goes on (instead of "needing" to remove people over time).

The biggest caveat to my updating right now is that I'm only looking at the lists on the NAS website with the filters: (1) primary appointment ONLY and (2) national members only. Meaning I won't be looking through international members, emeritus, public welfare medalists OR rescinded/resigned. If I do look through any of those I'll note it on the sub page (and my user page). Also as I'm going through living and deceased member lists separately, I may miss people on a list that don't fit these criteria. I think this would mostly be non-national members who have since passed away, people listed on their secondary field sublist, or rarely rescinded/resigned people or people mistakenly posted on the list. As of today (October 1 2024), non-national member counts: International Members (1213 across all lists), emeritus (509 across all lists), public welfare medalists (84).

Goals

edit
  • Primary goal: Update all NAS subfield lists to 2024 national members
  • Secondary goal: Update all NAS subfield lists to 2024 international members
  • Ongoing (neverending) goal: upkeep yearly when new nominees announced
  • Long term/dream goal: Make all NAS members blue links

NAS Categories I've Gone Through:

edit

Fully updated for living and deceased national members. I'll address international, emeritus, public welfare medalists, and resigned members at a later date (unless someone else does it first).

NAS Scientist Page Development

edit
edit

I try to do a diligent search to make sure the red link is real and not due to initials or slightly different name. I will always add deceased where applicable, largely to know how to approach creating a new article on the person. NAS also often has nice lengthy biographical memoirs for deceased NAS members on their website. Also, no note next to a scientist doesn't necessarily mean there isn't any other Wikipedia articles mentioning them (it might just mean I was lazy about filling out the list of red links I've found.)
