Moonbug Entertainment's version

Arpo: The Robot for All Kids (Korean: 로봇알포, romanizedRobot Alpo) was a South Korean animated television series created by Toonzip. It was first aired by MBC TV in early 2012. This series focuses on the struggles of the humanoid robot Arpo while taking care of 9-month-old baby Daniel from the Dilovely family.

British company Moonbug Entertainment claimed to have acquired the series in 2020, although Moonbug has started uploading Arpo: The Robot for All Kids videos on YouTube since mid-2018, five years after the closure of Toonzip in 2013. It has also created non-dialogue shorts with same name but with substantially different look since 2019.

History

edit

Development (2006–2012)

edit

Arpo: The Robot for All Kids was originated back from 2006, six years before its release, from a poster which shows concept characters known as Robot Arpo which is produced by Trunk Animation,[1] the predecessor of Toonzip.[2] It has similarities with, and maybe possibly, further derived from the characters of Mighty Block, a software of unknown purpose developed by Trunk Animation and Softwit on the same year.[3] On 8 January 2008, Trunk Animation announced partnership with Italian studio CartoonOne.[4] In the same year, Trunk Animation was later renamed to Toonzip.[citation needed]

Robot Arpo had weird-shaped human characters, namely Daniel (다니엘), Noe (노에), Emma (엠마), Debby (데비), and Bob (밥); with the robot characters Arpo (알포), Witwini (위트위니), and Seedstar (시드스타).[5] Now, these characters are only used for Hancom Typing Training 2010 (Korean: 한컴타자연습 2010).[5] The Robot Arpo prototype also has two pilots, Battle of Bathtub[6] and Arpo Space Travel[7] (Korean: 알포의 우주여앵, 알포의 우주체험[8]).

Later, Robot Arpo redesigned sometime in 2011[citation needed] and changed the English name to Arpo: The Robot for All Kids (the Korean name remains the same), whilst retaining some of characters' names, with the characters Noe, Witwini, and Seedstar are removed in the 2011 concept. Instead, Joey was added as a character.[9] During the first broadcasts on April 2012, Arpo: The Robot for All Kids once gained viewership rating of 1.3%, and was ranked as third most popular TV animated program on Daum.[10]

Decline and regain

edit

In 2013, former Toonzip employees, including Lee Byung-jun, founded Anyzac (which currently owns Zombiedumb), following its bankruptcy and Toonzip had "went into an unfortunate incident".[11] Also, the founder of Toonzip, Kang Nam-kyu deceased on 25 September 2013,[12] leaving the franchise with no clear ownership. In Indonesia, RTV first aired the Arpo: The Robot for All Kids in 2014.[13] In Russia, the series was premiered on 28 March 2015 by Multimania (now Multilandia).[14]

Acquisition by Moonbug and later developments

edit

In February 28, 2020, British company Moonbug Entertainment has acquired the whole franchise.[15] However, the YouTube channel who uploads Arpo: The Robot for All Kids episodes has been active since June 2018, with the first video on 24 June.[16] In 29 October 2019, non-dialogue shorts under same name was first premiered on Youtube,[17] and it is co-produced by Moonbug and Canary Islands-based studio 3Doubles Producciones.[18]

In 17 February 2020, the channel first uploaded Arpo: The Robot for All Kids episodes made by Toonzip remastered with different voice actors and audio,[19] and last uploaded by the official channel in 2 March 2021.[20] One month later, in April 9, 2021, the non-dialogue version of the series officially changed its name to simply Arpo.[21] According to Moonbug, Arpo is a backronym of Army Robot Prototype Omega.[22]
