Rumantsch Grischun is an attempted unified language of the Romansh language, of which not all municipalities in Grisons accept the unified variant. This page will discuss its grammar.

Stress positions

The stress rules in Rumantsch Grischun verbs includes:

  • Stress is placed on the stem in the forms described below:
    • Infinitive of the 3rd conjugation: vender 'to sell' [ˈvɛndər]
    • Present indicative forms except in 1pl and 2pl: gidas 'you help' [ˈdʑiːdɐs], but gidain 'we help' [dʑiˈdain]
    • All present subjunctive forms: gidia 'may I help' [ˈdʑiːdiɐ], gidian 'may we help' [ˈdʑiːdiɐn]
    • The 2sg imperative forms: gida! 'help!' [ˈdʑiːdɐ]
    • However, all endings on verbs infixed by -esch- are stressed on the endings: finescha! 'finish!' [fiˈnɛʃɐ]
  • Otherwise, the stress is placed on the first syllable of endings: gidava 'I helped' [dʑiˈdaːvɐ]
