Conflict of interest statement

When I am editing Wikipedia as part of my official professional duties, I always strive to strictly abide by Wikipedia's accepted practices on conflicts of interest, neutrality, and notability. Because the Monterey Bay Aquarium's mission is in line with Wikipedia's mission to disseminate knowledge freely, I will not make edits that I do not believe are in accordance with Wikipedia's practices and procedures. Therefore, I will not make substantive edits to articles related to the Monterey Bay Aquarium as an organization, or its personnel. Instead, if I edit articles, they will be to contribute subject matter expertise, for example to improve articles about our research.

More About Me

edit

I currently lead digital strategy for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Previously I led the Web and Social Media Branch at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. Prior to that, I worked on digital strategy for education at the National Gallery of Art in DC and spent 8 years at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History as New Media Project Manager and later as Chief of Digital Outreach and Engagement[1]. I have taught graduate level technology courses for the George Washington University's Museum Studies program and the Georgetown University Masters in Museum Studies program; I am currently an adjunct professor for The Johns Hopkins University Masters in Museum Studies program. I spent several years on the board of MCN, the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums. Engaging Museums is my blog about museums and technology.

In addition to my focus on museums, I have spent a good chunk of my work and volunteer life in the public health sector. I was an account director/digital strategist for Ogilvy Public Relations, where I managed social media strategy for public health clients such as The Heart Truth campaign and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I also spent 3 years in online communications and publishing at the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit health policy organization. I also served as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Education Fights AIDS International. In addition, I am a person living with Type 1 diabetes and am deeply interested in the potential of the quantified self movement to empower patients to improve their health and to optimize their lives.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in Women Studies from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a Master's degree in Museum Studies from The George Washington University. I also participated in the Getty Leadership Institute's NextGen program in 2011.
