"Firefighters attempted to extinguish a fire that erupted Wednesday in the outer housing of the containment vessel at reactor 4. An earlier fire, reportedly caused when some water-system lubricant ignited, was put out Tuesday. Reactor 4 remains without the power needed to irrigate its spent fuel pools, which hold an entire off-loaded fuel core. The core has heated up, releasing hydrogen that detonated, blowing holes in the roof of the containment building. Engineers may use helicopters to dump water into the pools to cool the fuel. A dreaded zirconium fire is possible if the fuel has been exposed for too long. "Tokyo Electric Power Co. said that an oil leak in a cooling water pump at Unit 4 was the cause of a fire that burned for approximately 140 minutes. The fire was not in the spent fuel pool, as reported by several media outlets. Unit 4 was in a 105-day-long maintenance outage at the time of the earthquake and there is no fuel in the reactor."
