Ata Tak is a Düsseldorf record label, founded in 1979 by Kurt "Pyrolator" Dahlke. It is considered one of the pioneers of the German independent music movement and a primary trigger of the Neue Deutsche Welle.

History

edit

The label was founded by Dahlke in 1979 under the name Warning Records. In 1980 he partnered with Frank Fenstermacher and Moritz Reichelt and renamed the label Ata Tak, a parody of "Art Attack", the name of Reichelt and Fenstermacher's new wave art gallery in Wuppertal.

The first release of the label was the first untitled 7" EP by Reichelt and Fenstermacher's band Der Plan, 1500 copies of which were released in 1979. The next release, and the first album, was Ein Produkt der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft, the first album by Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft.

The most popular recording on the label was "Fred Vom Jupiter" by Andreas Dorau & Die Marinas,[1] which reached number 21 on the mainstream German singles chart in 1982.
