David Forbes was born in 1955 at Doune, Scotland, and raised at Nanaimo, British Columbia. He graduated from Carleton University (2002) with a Master of Journalism; his thesis was "Medicine Wheels and the Media: Seeking Journalistic Balance from a Native Perspective." Forbes is a former newspaper editor and reporter, radio broadcaster and college instructor. He has edited five books of life experiences written by various authors, and has instructed a short course on writing life stories at Medicine Hat College. Forbes served as a director on the Alberta Press Council (2005 to 2011).
