Pugwash News is the official student newspaper of the University of Portsmouth. It was founded in 2007 by the University of Portsmouth Students' Union (UPSU) but is written and edited by students and maintains editorial independence.
It is published fortnightly during term time[1]. Together with radio station Pure FM, TV station UPSU TV and sister publication Pugwash Magazine, it makes up the student media at UPSU[2].
Name
editThe name is an acronym for "Portsmouth University guild of writers and student hacks" and is not a reference to the cartoon Captain Pugwash as sometimes believed.[3]
History
editPugwash News was founded in 2007 by Alex Harries and Jacob Leverett[3]. Originally a 12 page black and white newspaper, it expanded to 16 pages and full colour in 2008, before expanding to it's current format of 20-24 pages in 2010[3]. The newspaper launched a new website in 2010[4]. It features content from the newspaper, as well as additional online-only content. Past issues are also available to view and download.[5]
