Detinu refers to a fabled group of 44 knights who served the Norman King Henry I during his reign from 1100 to 1135 AD. Legend has it that following the king's death from food poisoning on December 1st, the last survivor of the Detinu, Sir Mark Stephen, continued to valiantly and loyally fight for his deceased king for nearly a decade, well into the subsequent period known as The Anarchy resulting from the power struggle for the thrown between Empress Matilda and King Stephen. Sir Mark Stephen is often referred to as the 44th Detinu, or Detinu44. The existence of the Detinu has never been confirmed. It is noted that Detinu is United spelled backwards.
