Peter Matthews was born in 1978 in Derby, England. He works in various oceans around the world, primarily the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of south west England, but he has also worked in remote Pacific Ocean locations including Mexico, Costa Rica and Taiwan. Matthews' works are often identified by his sea scrawlings on paper in which the artist spends long periods of time drifting in or standing at chest height in the ocean observing what he sees out-there in the vastness of space. Matthews also works in sculpture, video, film, painting and photography. The artist works in isolation and at times works are lost to the ocean during the act of making and finding the work. The artist has exhibited internationally since graduating with an MFA in 2003. Noticeable groups exhibitions include Sea Marks at the Drawing Center in New York, Power of the Sea at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, England, 0:60: The Experience of Time Through Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art, USA which subsequently toured to the Pratt Manhattan Gallery, New York, Sea Journeys, Künstlerhaus Dortmund, Germany, Landscape at the James Cohan Gallery, New York and Spectral at Karst, Plymouth, England, amongst others. Matthews has shown his work in solo exhibitions including Continuum at the James Cohan Gallery, New York and the Sea Marks at the Mendes Wood Gallery, São Paulo, Brazil.
