Wilkins Hall, a student residence hall at Illinois state university, is the first residence hall on campus with modern amenities. Built in 1964, it is one of three residence halls adjacent to Redbird arena and Hancock Stadium located on west campus also called Tri-towers. Wilkins was the first of three residence halls to be built in west campus. [2]

History

Wilkins Hall was named after Daniel Wilkins, Principal of the Wilkins Female Academy in Bloomington. Daniel Wilkins was a part of the establishment of Illinois State Normal University and free public schools in Illinois.[3] Wilkins opened in 1964 and housed 420 men. It was the first residence hall on campus that offered air conditioning.

Dining

The Market place at Linkins is attached to Wilkins and is accessible from the basement as well as the first floor of Wilkins. Also, Subway is located in Wilkins lobby on the first floor as well as multiple vending machines.[5]

Laundry

Located in the basement of Wilikins is nine washers and twelve dryers accessible to all residence. [6]

Other

Students also have full access to the study areas on the 12th floor of Wilkins.[7]

Vacation Operation

Wilkins Hall is closed and students must vacate the premises during official university vacation periods. However during thanksgiving break Wilkins halls remains open to students.[8]

Renovations

edit

In 2003 a renovation project was presented by the board of trustees at Illinois State University. Wilkins Hall was the first residence hall to be renovated and was competed in 2005 which featured updated floor plan layouts and a new lobby.[9] [10]
