The Dictionary of Political Economy (later: Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy, and still later: The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics) was a series of books, first published by Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave between 1894 and 1899 in three volumes. Some reprint were published, and a supplement in 1908. Although the title says dictionary, the work had from the beginning more the character of an encyclopedia.

Palgrave's Dictionary was not the first in its sort. There had been some attempts to create a similar work in English, and in France and Germany there had been predecessors.

Between 1924 and 1926 a new edition, edited by Henry Higgs was published, entitled Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy.

In 1987 The New Palgrave : A Dictionary of Economics appeared. It was a four volume work, edited by John Eatwell, Murray Milgate and Peter Newman. It was again published in 2008 in eight volumes. There is also an online version.

Stigler (Stigler (1988) distinguishes only two editions: "Palgrave I" and "Palgrave II". In fact anno 2008 there have been published at least four different editions of the Dictionary of Political Economy.

Predecessors

edit

The Dictionary of Political Economy was not the first dictionary on the subject in English. Already in 1845 Charles Knight published a Political Dictionary, forming a work of universal reference, both constitutional and legal; and embracing the terms of civil administration, of political economy and social relations, and of all the more important statistical departments of finance and commerce. It consisted of two volumes.[1]

In 1863 Henry Dunning Macleod started an ambitious project: A Dictionary of Political Economy : Biographical, Bibliographical, Historical, and Practical. Only 1 volume (A-C) was published.[2]

In France the Dictionnaire d'économie politique first appeared in 1852 in two volumes. It had famous economists like Jean Baptiste Say as contributors.[3] In 1854 a second edition was published.[4] In 1864 a third edition appeared.[5]

These French dictionaries had had their predecessors, dating back to 1709.[6]

In Germany the first of 6 volumes (and 2 supplements) of Handwörterbuch der Staatswissenschaften was published in 1890.[7]

First edition: Dictionary of Political Economy

edit

The first published Dictionary of Political Economy appeared in three volumes in 1894, 1896 and 1899. The contract between Palgrave and Macmillan, the publisher, dates back to 1888. The original contract called for a work in two volumes. Next a plan was made to make publications in smaller parts of about 120-130 pages each, that would appear at quarterly intervals. From 1891 onward, parts of the Dictionary were published. In 1891 appeared the first part: Abatement – Bede. The next year two more parts were printed, extending into the letter C. At that stage the publication in smaller parts stopped, and the choice was made for three volumes.[8]

The project was not completed in 1899. The appendix to the third volume was first published in 1908.

Commercial success of the publication
The first phase was a clear commercial failure. The sales of the first three parts were very small. This may have added to the change of plan to a publication in three volumes.

The New Palgrave

edit

--- see: The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics

In 1987 the first edition of The New Palgrave : A Dictionary of Economics" appeared.[10]
Editors:

The preparations began in 1983, when the editors compiled an initial list of headwords and invited around 100 economist to participate. The entries were commissioned by the editors from offices in Cambridge and Baltimore, and prepared for publication by the Macmillan Press in London.

The work, in four volumes, contains nearly 2000 signed entries, written by more than 900 contributors. Over 700 of these entries are in fact biographical.[11] The New Palgrave includes some 50 entries reprinted from the original Dictionary of Political Economy, like F.Y. Edgeworth's article on Agents of Production and Henry Sidgwick's entry on Economic Science and Economics.

To mark the publication of The New Palgrave, a reprint of the original Dictionary was published.

In 2008 a second edition was published.
