Controversies
editIn the past, both locals and tourists have run into numerous different issues at Opium, primarily concerning the security staff. There are claims that have been made online on Tripadvisor and other travel review websites, advising people not to go to Opium due to the racism and other cruelty and violence exemplified by the bouncers. Claims were in fact made that “they sent a message with the ticket seller that they didn’t want any Asians inside,” according to an online reviewer. Another review reads, “Went with a big group of people, and the only person not allowed in was the only black girl in our group. She was not drunk and was dressed well-- the bouncers refused to explain why she couldn't enter. Please don't support this place.” Opium has not responded to these claims that have been posted within the past six months.
Additionally, due to the high volume of visitors at Opium, it has become a hotspot for pickpocketers and other criminal activity. Many have reported lost or stolen items at Opium, which have rarely been found or returned after the matter. Many have also reported having been drugged via drink inside the nightclub. Due to these safety concerns, people are often advised not to go to Opium.
