If you have talked to me through voice chat, like on Discord, you likely will notice that I use a Text to speech (TTS) voice to communicate. The following is a small, personal user essay to explain this.

Why?

First off, I'm non-binary. Although I wouldn't say that I have much, if any gender dysphoria, I still wouldn't say that I necessarily like — or want to use — my voice.

There are also some privacy reasons why I wouldn't want to use my voice, however I don't know what exactly I would want to write about that.

How?

I use three programs: VB-CABLE, Voicemod, and Type to Voice Chat. I do this on a Windows 10 computer, so I am not aware of these software's compatibility with other operating systems.

VB-CABLE

First, download the setup for VB-CABLE using the link above, and then use the instructions in the setup to install the software. This will be used for linking Type to Voice Chat to Voicemod.

Voicemod

(The download link for Voicemod is on the m:Spam blacklist.)

This step is optional. It is used so that you can hear what the voice chat sounds like while it is talking. If you do not download Voicemod, you can use the steps in § Without Voicemod.

Go to the link above and download Voicemod. After doing so and setting it up, go to the settings, and change the input device to VB-CABLE's "CABLE Output", and change the output device to your preferred output device (eg. headphones, speakers, etc.). On the bottom of your screen, turn on the setting "hear myself".

Type to Voice Chat

Download and install the app from the Microsoft Store, and on the right side of the text field, you can change your output device; change the output to VB-CABLE's "Cable In 16ch".

Then, go to the application that you want to chat in — for example, Discord — and change your input device to the Voicemod microphone.

Without Voicemod

If you choose not to use Voicemod, then the only change that you need to do is to change the input device of the application that you want to chat in from the Voicemod microphone (which you wouldn't have if you're not using Voicemod) to VB-CABLE's "CABLE Output".
