       ″HEMIDESMUS INDICUS (ANANTMOOL): A POTENTIAL TRADITIONAL PLANT WITH ANTIVENOM ACTIVITY″

ABSTRACT: The field of Ayurvedic Science is acquiring more importance and prevalence all through the world as a result of its amazing medicinal uses. Therapeutic plants have been utilized by humankind since ancient times. According to World Health Organization, 80% of individuals depend on natural drugs for some aspect of their primary healthcare. Hemidesmus indicus (Anantmool) is a significant medicinal plant, which is described in Ayurvedic literature and current science because of the presence of its number of remedial properties. Hemidesmus indicus is locally known as Anantmool and Indian Sarsaparilla. It is an aromatic, long-rooted plant that belongs to the Apocynaceae family. The plant is widely cultivating in deciduous forests, uncultivated lands and moist hedges. The medicinal plant is used against a variety of diseases due to the presence of various phytochemicals like Hemidesmol, Resin, Glucoside, Tannin and Resin. The plant parts, roots and rhizome have been utilized for hundreds of years in Ayurvedic medication for relieving countless diseases. Many reported studies highlighted the potential pharmacological properties of H. indicus like anti-cataractous, antidiarrhoeal, anti-cancerous, anti-diabetics, anti-venom, anti-angiogenic. The present work aims overall Ayurvedic and modern therapeutical information of Hemidesmus indicus with various reported Ayurvedic literature and scientific pharmacological studies.

CONCLUSION In this present review, we have summarized the basic information, phytochemical constituents, Ayurvedic uses, modern uses and various reported therapeutic studies of Hemidesmus indicus. H. indicus is a potent plant utilized for both Ayurvedic and modern formulation. Various reported studies on the H. indicus are available to confirm its traditional applications. The roots of H. indicus are known to be rich in aromatic aldehydes and their derivatives. This medicinal plant is most commonly used in all traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and folk system. H. indicus is a rich source of alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, phenolic compounds, tannins, insulin, lignin and cardiac glycosides. Reported studies have revealed various pharmacological activities like anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiulcer, antioxidant, anti-atherogenic, anti-carcinogenic, antileprotic, etc. In the present time H. indicus is in great demand due to which it is becoming an endangered species. Proper standardization is therefore required to extract the maximum benefit from this valuable plant.


″KARANJ (PONGAMIA PINNATA) – AN AYURVEDIC AND MODERN OVERVIEW″

ABSTRACT: Pongamia pinnata is one of the significant herbal plants with different therapeutic medicinal properties. P.pinnata is a potential medium-sized legume tree, also known as Karanja. It is widely distributed in Indian Western Ghats. This plant is mostly cultivated around coastal areas, riverbanks, tidal forests, and roadsides. Conventionally, the leaves, seeds, and the whole plant were utilized in the treatment of many ailments. There are various phytochemicals isolated from the P. pinnata plant. Karanjin is the principal furanoflavonoid of the plant. It was known to be the first crystalline compound isolated from this plant. The plant is therapeutically important in traditional medicine as well as in modern drugs. Oil extract from the P. pinnata seeds is utilized in agriculture and pharmacy. Seed oil is also proved to be a biofuel in recent studies. There are various therapeutical uses of the P. pinnata, including antiulcer, anti-diarrheal, antiplasmodial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-lice, and others. The karanja seeds contain 27-40%(w/w/) oil. Commercially, the seed oil of the P. pinnata is used as biodiesel. The present review article reveals the overall ayurvedic and modern therapeutic information of P. pinnata with various reported ayurvedic literature and scientific pharmacological studies.

CONCLUSION : Nature has been a good source of medicinal plant since immemorial time. At present, many modern drugs have been isolated from the plant source. Karanja has been recognized as a medicinal plant in a traditional system for the treatment of various diseases of human beings. Many scientific studies have proved the pharmacological activities of the P. pinnata such as anti-ulcer, anti-diarrheal, antiplasmodial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-lice, and many more. Apart from the multiple biological effects, seed oil obtained from this plant is proved to be biodiesel as per recent studies. Conclusively this plant herbal plant is proved to be a multipurpose tree with good economic value.

″WHEATGRASS (TRITICUM AESTIVUM LINN.): A POTENTIAL SUBSTITUTE OF HUMAN BLOOD IN TRADITIONAL SYSTEM OF MEDICINE″

ABSTRACT : Wheatgrass (Triticum aestivum Linn.) refers to the young grass of the common wheat plant which belongs to the family Poaceae. It is known as the powerhouse of nutrients and vitamins. The juice of wheatgrass is known as “green blood” which contains an excessive amount of chlorophyll content (70% of the total chemical constituents), antioxidants, active enzymes, vitamins, and other vital nutrients which are used to enhance lungs and heart function. Wheatgrass juice is also taken as a supplementary diet to boost the immune system and provide strength to the human body. From reported studies, it is proved that molecules of human blood hemoglobin and wheatgrass chlorophyll contain the same structure and can act as a substitute for hemoglobin in hemoglobin deficiency conditions. It is a highly nutritive plant and is used to cure diseases such as cancer, diabetes, ulcer, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperlipidemia, thalassemia, anemia, kidney stone, asthma, digestive problems, and skin diseases. Pharmacologically, wheatgrass carries properties such as anti-diabetic, anti-allergic, antioxidant, anti-ulcer, anticancer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antiarthritic properties. In this review paper, attempts have been made to provide a brief overview of wheatgrass, its pharmacological activities, and ayurvedic view.

CONCLUSION : Wheatgrass is commonly known as the youngest shoot or young grass of the common wheat plant. It is also known by the name of “green blood” because it has a nearly similar structure to that of the hemoglobin molecule. This plant has greater importance in Ayurveda medicinal system and is used to treat various ailments and disorders. It is used as a hemoglobin substitute in humans to treat thalassemia and anemic patients, which increases RBCs and blood count. Due to the presence of high chlorophyll content, it is used to improve heart and lung function. Furthermore, it carries pharmacological properties such as anticancer, anti-arthritic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and anti-thalassemia properties. It is the richest source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and antioxidants which helps in treating diseases such as cancer, ulcer, skin diseases, and many more. From reported studies, it is clear that the wheatgrass plant contains a vast range of nutrients and other important chemical constituents and need to explore more in the areas of research and studies to develop its more therapeutic and pharmacological properties to promote its more medicinal value in the field of Ayurveda and medical sciences.
