In cooperation with the Bishop of Ashanti Konongo- Mampong Dr Labib used to travel deep into west Africa to offer free comprehensive orthopedic healthcare where there is practically none. In the city of Mampong where this initiative has taken root, it is immediately evident that a large percentage of the population seem plagued with traumatic injuries and neglected deformities and fractures. The Mampong Healthcare Volunteer Program is an evolving initiative that aims to provide free surgical and non-surgical care to the Ghanian communities that do not have access to it. The surgeons travel at their personal expense and are hosted by the Church’s Bishop Rev. Joseph where they stay for a period ranging 8 – 15 days. An abandoned building is transformed into a makeshift hospital that aims to treat 50,000 people per year once it’s fully functioning. The hospital is built on a voluntary basis and funded by donations and personal contributions. Medical supplies are donated by European and UAE-based private companies providing necessary medications, surgical disposables, wound care supplies and implant parts that are going to be used during these trips. Most accepted cases are those suffering from deformities, neglected fractures, bone infections and massive traumatic injuries. The surgeons proceed to see around 50 patients and perform 8 – 10 major surgeries each day with the support of a local GP medical team. Entire families and hundreds of individuals camp outside of the hospital waiting for their turn to be examined. Everyone is smiling and the entire group is buzzing with hope. As the program slowly starts scaling up, we can’t help but notice the impact it has had so far in these few years. Around 3000 patients have been treated so far through this initiative particularly between 2018 to 2022. Children who were born with deformities are now playing with their friends and able to pursue an education and further their personal development and growth. Men and women who were treated can now look after their families and find good work and no longer have to suffer through unnecessary pain. The benefits to the patient go beyond the restoration of their daily physical function. The entire community benefits when employment rates can go up. A tangible positive rise in the quality of life in the city is evident over time as a direct result to this initiative. We now aim to upscale this initiative to treat more medical conditions, more numbers of patients and expand to other cities in need of tertiary medical care.
