Dr Jose Mackliff

Dr. Jose Mackliff Hidalgo is an Ecuadorian doctor in medicine and surgery. Creator of the BEAM surgical procedure for schizophrenia. BEAM stands for Bi-lateral Electrocoagulation of the Adrenal Medulla. After several years of research at the University of Guayaquil, Hospital de Neuro-Ciencias de Guayaquil, and Hospital Luis Vernaza from the Junta de Beneficiencia de Guayaquil, Dr. Mackliff built the fundamentals for the surgery. In 2.006, the BEAM procedure was practiced in the first schizophrenic patient in the world. BEAM surgery is the alternative method for the eradication of symptoms in schizophrenic patients, and is, therefore, the most recent surgical treatment as opposed to the life-long supply of psychiatric medication. The BEAM surgical procedure for the treatment of Schizophrenia is regarded as the only surgical treatment with medical evidence, that bridges the gap between psychiatry and surgery.

In 2.010 the Book, BEAM Schizophrenia & Parkinson Surgery was published – amazon books. Dr. Mackliff is an active professional member of the New York Academy of Science.

Professional Career

Dr. Mackliff´s medical career has focused on the research to eradicate the symptoms of Schizophrenia, which led to the creation of the BEAM procedure.

In 1.983, Dr. Mackliff discovered that producing hyperglycemia for a period of 8 to 12 hours, with one and two liters of 30% hypertonic glucose; the aggressiveness and psychotic symptoms of patients vanished 48 or 72 hours after the test. The study of creating an increase of Glucose in the bloodstream on 52 chronic schizophrenic patients in the relapse phase at the Lorenzo Ponce Hospital-Hospital de Neurociencias, in Guayaquil, originated the cornerstone of the future BEAM procedure.

This test brought the question as to why schizophrenic patients improved with hyper-glucemia? The answer was that by increasing glucose, adrenaline and noradrenaline were not released into the bloodstream.

Dr. Mackliff proceeded to measure glucose levels before, during, and after meals, to learn that schizophrenic patients show post-pandrial hypoglycemia, and this disorder depends on the HPTA axis (hypothalamus-Pituitary-thyroid-adrenal) fatigue and the autonomous system. The conclusion of the study was that a gluco-regulation disorder, produces suprarenal fatigue, and to correct it in a permanent way, it could only be accomplished by suprarenal surgery.

Blocking adrenaline production by surgery was done by the bi-lateral electrocoagulation of the adrenal medulla, located on top of the kidneys. After Improving HPTA axis fatigue, by eliminating 80% of adrenaline, and 20% of Noradrenaline, cortisol steps in to complement the regulation of glucose metabolism, stress, and the rest of basic human functions

In 2.006 the first B.E.A.M procedure took place in Hospital Luis Vernaza - Guayaquil, Ecuador. The surgery was performed by a medical team, led by Dr. Jose Mackliff, who together with Dr. Oscar Sanchez, for the first time in medical history opened the suprarenal gland in order to get bilateral electro-coagulation of the adrenal medulla in the human body. Dr. Mackliff lives in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he continues to work with his clinical patients, as well as BEAM patients that come from around the world.
