Parks in Duluth are operated primarily by the City of Duluth Department of Parks and Recreation. There are 129 such park facilities grouped into several categories[1], and some may be included in more than one category. Two of the parks operated by Duluth Parks & Recreation extend into Midway Township and one athletic facility is completely contained in Rice Lake Township.
In addition to the parks operated by Duluth Parks & Recreation, there are also parks and protected areas operated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Community and Regional Parks
editDuluth's community and regional parks are often the greatest in area or popularity in the surrounding community, and they form the core of the park system. Nearly all of Duluth's parks are near water and have picturesque scenery, like cascading waterfalls or commanding panoramic views of Lake Superior.
Neighborhood parks
editNeighborhood parks are typically smaller than the community parks, and generally place more emphasis on facilities such as recreation centers than on natural landscapes. They are usually 3 acres (1.2 ha) or smaller, and are intended to serve the immediate surrounding neighborhood with amenities such as basketball courts and playground equipment.
