English baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore is recognized as one of the world’s leading exponents of the Italian baritone repertory. Mr. Michaels-Moore was the first British winner of the Luciano Pavarotti Competition and has since become a firmly established guest artist with the world’s leading opera houses. The singer is managed by IMG Artists.[1]
Early Life
editAnthony Michael Frederick Moore (b. Grays, Essex, 8 April 1957) grew up in a musical household; his father John was a noted amateur choral conductor. Mr. Michaels-Moore studied music and history at Newcastle University (1975-1978) and concentrated on music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (1984-1985). As his warm-toned voice gained in size, dramatic intensity and focus, he made impressive figures of such Verdi parts as Stankar (Stiffelio) and Egberto (Aroldo), and Macbeth and Simon Boccanegra in the first versions of both operas.[2]
Professional Career
editIn 1985 Anthony Michaels-Moore was a joint winner of the Pavarotti Competition in Philadelphia, which led to his U.S. opera début there (Guglielmo, 1988). Following roles with Scottish Opera-Go-Round and Opera North, (including the Messenger in Oedipus Rex and Escamillo in Carmen) the singer débuted with the Royal Opera House in 1987, where he continues to enjoy an extensive relationship. He has appeared in L’Elisir d’amore, La Bohème, I Pagliacci (Silvio), Die Fledermaus, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Cunning Little Vixen, Massenet’s Manon, Stiffelio, Tosca, the 1857 version of Simon Boccanegra in concert, Macbeth (both versions), Le Nozze di Figaro, Andrea Chénier, La Battaglia di Legnano, Il Trovatore, Falstaff (Ford), Tosca, Attila, Lucia di Lammermoor and La Traviata.
Anthony Michaels-Moore has also performed with many of Britain’s other major theatres such as English and Welsh National Operas, Opera North, Scottish Opera, as well as at the Glyndebourne Festival, covering a wide-ranging repertoire including Pearl Fishers, La Bohème, Eugene Onegin, Le Nozze di Figaro, La Traviata, Don Carlos, Andrea Chenier, Otello and Hamlet.
Anthony Michaels-Moore’s European engagements include Vienna’s State Opera (Don Carlos, Rigoletto, Tosca, Nabucco, Manon Lescaut, L’Elisir d’Amore, Stiffelio, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, I Vespri Siciliani, La Forza del Destino); Teatro alla Scala (La Vestale with Muti, Linda di Chamounix, Beatrice di Tenda); Opéra National de Paris (Madama Butterfly, Iphigénie en Tauride, Le nozze di Figaro, Eugene Onegin, Falstaff, Il Trovatore, Les Vepres Siciliennes); Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper (Le nozze di Figaro, Tosca, La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, Nabucco); Deutsche Oper (Eugene Onegin, La Traviata, Le nozze di Figaro) and Staatsoper Berlin (La forza del destino); Barcelona’s Liceu (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Andrea Chenier, Lucia di Lammermoor, Simone Boccanegra); Paris’ Châtelet (Otello, Falstaff); Grand Théâtre de Geneve (Don Carlos), Brussels la Monnaie (I due Foscari, Rigoletto) and Madrid’s Teatro Real (Rigoletto).
Equally prolific in North America, Anthony Michaels-Moore has sung with every major American opera house including regular appearances with the Metropolitan Opera (La Bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Traviata, Cyrano di Bergerac/De Guiche, Peter Grimes); San Francisco Opera (Eugene Onegin, Don Carlos, Lucia di Lammermoor, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci); Chicago’s Lyric Opera (Attila); The Santa Fe Opera(Simon Boccanegra, Falstaff marking his role debut, La Traviata with Natalie Dessay, and the World Premiere of Pulitzer Prize winning composer Paul Moravec's opera The Letter[3][4][5]; Pittsburgh Opera (Un ballo in maschera, role debut); Opera Colorado (Madama Butterfly) and at Florida Grand Opera (La fanciulla del West). The Artist has also appeared at the historic Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires (Andrea Chénier).
With a repertoire including Haydn’s Creation, Mahler’s Symphony No 8, Carmina Burana, Dream of Gerontius, Oedipus Rex, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 and Missa Solemnis, Mr. Michaels-Moore is a regular concert artist and has performed with such conductors as Vladimir Jurowski, Sir Colin Davis, Riccardo Muti, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Sir Andrew Davis, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, André Previn, Leonard Slatkin, Bernard Haitink and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
On several occasions Anthony Michaels-Moore has appeared at the First Night of the BBC Proms and performed with renowned orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orkest, London Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Concentus Musicus and the Orchestra of La Scala Milan. In 2007, the Singer gave his London recital debut at St. John’s Smith Square as part of the prestigious Rosenblatt Recital Series.[6]
