These wooden vessels brought heavy goods, such as coal, to Arran villages during the 19th and early 20th century until there were replaced by the web documented coal powered 'Puffers'.
Robert Simper, in his book 'Scottish Sail A Forgotten Era', describes them as "forgotten craft of the sailing ship era". Many photographs were taken in the first half of the 20th century and the NLS Scottish Screen Archive holds footage of a vessel discharging coal at Brodick in 1934.
