Poydras Street Market, also known as Poydras Market which later turned into South Market, is a shopping area with multiple different kinds or stores, markets, and restaurants. The market is located on Poydras Street. It has been the place for many attractions for people to shop and has been busy since the late 1830's. There were many advances made over the years to upgrade the market.

History

Poydras Street Market was originally completed in 1837 and it was placed on Poydras St.. The Market was kept busy by the families that lived ion the area at the time. Those same families on February 6, 1897 fought to keep that area and Poydras St. from being annexed into the New Orleans city limits. Poydras was annexed along with Loyola street. In the 1890's the city created a prosperity plan to help develop all the different areas. Then in 1903 Poydras Market was wired for electricity. After in 1906 the city petitioned for the streetlight to be placed in the market. Finally in 1909 Herbert H. Ruch petitioned for refrigerator or "Ice Boxes" to be placed into the market as well. Later on Poydras Street Market was renamed to South Market in honor of the historic street market.

Attractions

There are many attractions in the Poydras Street Market. Allegro Bistro is a popular upscale return inside of the market. Then there is Johnny Sánchez is a chic type Mexican restaurant that has a celebrity chef John Besh and Aarón Sánchez. City Greens is also a popular salad shop with wraps, juices, and soups. There also many popular food franchises like Jimmy Johns Company Burger. There are also exercise parlors. A few a Barre3 and Crescent City Pilates. There are places that provide fitness, traditional/ nontraditional pilates, and yoga classes. Another attraction are the clothing store to shop in. There is Stonefree which is a 60's/70's influenced store and clothing brand. Arhaus is a handcrafted furniture store. Also there is Hattie Sparks which is a boutique with an array of items to choose from. Rouses is also a grocery store to get anything that is essential. The fun attractions are Walk Ons, the Civic Theater, and Buff Beauty Bar. The Beauty Bar is a urban spa that does waxes, facials, other spa necessities. Finally if someone wanted to live in the South Market there are luxurious apartments like The Paramount. All of these attractions are also down the street, and walking distance, from the Superdome and Smoothie King Arena.

Description

Currently there are over 60 stores, markets, and restaurants that complete Poydras Street Market. There are spas, restaurants, and stores to choose from to spend time in. This market place stretches all the way from the the intersection of Poydras Street and The Port of New Orleans to the other intersection of Poydras St. and the interstate. It covers a large area and also stretches to the Superdome and Smoothie King Center. There are also main streets that intersect and cross this area like Loyola st. as well. There are plenty of street vendors along this street also that sells a variety of options.
