My name is Eduardo Mercer, I come from São Paulo, Brazil and I currently live in Tallinn, Estonia. I'm an Interaction Designer with a BDes in Industrial Design from the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation and a Master's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction from Tallinn University.
Short Bio
editI was born in São José do Rio Preto, some 270 miles (450km) northwest of São Paulo, in 1979 and moved to the state capital the same year. Four years later my parents reallocated back to my hometown and we stayed there for the rest of my childhood. There I attended Elementary at Colégio Santo André, Junior-High at Anglo and High-School at COOPEC (Class of 1996). I spent one year preparing for my vestibular exams and moved once again to São Paulo in early 1998 to attend college. Two college false-starts later I moved once again to São José do Rio Preto and opened the city's very first cybercafe, but my lack of managing skills and my admittance later the same year to the University of São Paulo's Polytechnic School brought it to a sudden end, missing the brazilian lan-house boom by a whole year. After a third attempt at getting a college degree I signed a temporary leave from USP in late 2005 and began developing videogames. In 2007 I decided to get a Bachelor of Design degree and enrolled into the class of 2011 of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation. Later in 2013 I moved to Tallinn to pursue a Master's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction at Tallinn University and have been working for the Financial technology startup TransferWise since.
Academia
editI have had three false-starts at a college degree, starting in 1998 up until 2005. I have studied:
- One year (1998) of Data processing technology at the Faculdade de Tecnologia de São Paulo (FATEC)
- Three years (1999-2001) of Electrical engineering at the Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (Mackenzie)
- Three years (2002-2005) of Mechatronics engineering at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP)
After working as a game programmer for a while I have returned to the academic world as a student of Industrial Design. The fields of user experience and experience design are very much related to the process of game development and there aren't many professionals available in Brazil. I got my BDes at the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP), class of 2011. I also did some work for the Foundation as a programmer/modeler in Second Life. I've later moved to Tallinn, Estonia to pursue a Master's Degree in Human-Computer Interaction at Tallinn University, which I defended in 2015.
Publishing
editDuring my first year at USP I was employed as a trainee to the SIM-LME lab writing sigmoid perceptron neural networks and remote instrumentation software for an electronic nose prototype. For this project I have authored and co-authored three papers:
- "Nariz eletrônico", SILVA, Paulo Roberto de Souza et alli; Sao Paulo, USP, 2002 [1]
- "Sistema de monitoração elétrica remota acessível via internet", MERCER, Eduardo F. et alli; São Paulo, USP, 2002 [2]
- "Controle remoto de sistema embarcado", MERCER, Eduardo et alli; Sao Paulo, USP, 2002 [3]
In 2015 I defended my thesis in Tallinn University, which was later picked up by the Association for Computing Machinery SIGCHI 2016:
- "Towards a Pattern Language for Distributed User Interfaces", MERCER, Eduardo; SHMORGUN, Ilya; LAMAS, David; In: Proceedings of the extended abstracts of the 34th annual ACM conference on Human factors in computing systems CHI '16, 2016 [4]
