Thunder Bay Police Service Scandals

The following is a brief summary of Scandals concerning the Police Service in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Sources date from the 1990s to 2022.

The Thunder Bay Police Service was named after the congregation of three towns which merged to create Thunder Bay, Ontario. They have been involved in scandals concerning indigenous people, at-risk youths and vulnerable demographics.

In 2018 CTV News aired a program on their Docuseries W5, concerning the treatment by Thunder Bay Police of underage boys in the 1990s, where boys were raped and tortured at a juvenile detention center and prevented from calling their family. Thunder Bay Police reportedly knew about the sexual and physical abuse and did not make any statements to the public.

Since then, Thunder Bay Police have been involved in many scandals of the inhumane treatment of adolescents and children, both indigenous and Caucasian children have complained of abusive treatment to many sources and news agencies.

In 2012 several independent journalists reportedly captured Thunder Bay Police officers driving around Academy Drive and the McKenzie area, touching, grabbing and talking sexually to underage girls.

The state of the relationship between Thunder Bay Police can be described as contentious, 83% of citizens claim they did not recieve any help when officers were called to assist after a crime.

There are also many reports of Thunder Bay Police Service officers harassing people where no crime had been reported, both on and off duty.

Many lawsuits and complaints have been filed against officers in the recent years, this coloured and complex history has been documented by many of the people who have witnessed unusual acts by TBPS officers.

In 2011, a Christian group was seeking to link demonic activity to the town of Thunder Bay, citing the high frequency of corruption.
