Sustainability

Sustainability Team (STeam)

The Sustainability Team (STeam) is a volunteer student sustainability corps institutionalized by the ASUC in 2006 and lead by the ASUC Director of Environmental Sustainability. Every year since its founding, STeam volunteers have coordinated annual EarthWeek celebrations and distribute reusable stainless steel water bottles free of charge to students. During the 2007 spring semester, the Sustainability Team founded The Local, an on-campus, volunteer-run produce stand offering students locally-grown and organic produce.

Take Back the Tap

During the Fall 2011 semester, the ASUC Senate voted in favor of a "Take Back the Tap" bill, whose aim is to eliminate the sale of bottled water on campus by 2014. The Cal Student Store was the first on-campus vendor to honor the ASUC's decision. The bill was passed at the same time that a campaign to promote the drinking of tap water, called "I Heart Tap Water", was being promoted by a coalition between Cal Dining (the university dining program), University Health Services (the university health program) and the campus Office of Environment, Health and Safety. The latter effort won 2010 and 2011 The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) grants, worth a total of $54,000, to fund the installation of "hydration stations" (water fountains specifically designed to refill reusable water bottles) on campus.
