Natan Sznaider (born October 6, 1954, in Mannheim) is an Israeli sociologist. He taught at the Academic College in Tel Aviv.[1] From July to September 2022, Sznaider was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at LMU Munich (CAS) by invitation of Michael Brenner (LMU).[2] From March to June 2023, he was a Senior Fellow at the IFK in Vienna.[3] From May to June 2024, Sznaider will be a guest researcher at the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study.[4]

Personal life

Natan Sznaider was born in Mannheim in 1954 to stateless Holocaust survivors from Poland.[5] At the age of 20, he moved to Israel and initially worked in various kibbutzim.[6] In August 1993, Sznaider married an Israeli historian, and the following year their daughter was born.[7]

Academic Career

In 1977, Sznaider began studying sociology, psychology, history, and philosophy at Tel Aviv University. In 1984, he transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1992 with a dissertation on the social history of compassion.[8] That same year, he began working for the Leo Baeck Institute in Berlin.[9]

He taught at Columbia University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, LMU Munich, and has been teaching sociology at the Academic College in Tel Aviv since 1994. He has held the sociology chair there since 1996, teaching "Sociology of the Holocaust."[10] His research focuses on cultural sociology, political theory, Hannah Arendt, globalization, cosmopolitanism, memory, and the Holocaust. In numerous books and essays, Sznaider explores the Jewish political theory of Hannah Arendt.[11]

Together with Daniel Levy, he coined the terms cosmopolitan memory and cosmopolitan remembrance.[12] With Alejandro Baer, he explored an ethics of "Never Again" in the Spanish and Argentine context.[13]

In his 2022 book Vanishing Points of Memory: On the Presence of Holocaust and Colonialism, Sznaider searches for a narrative in memory politics and sociology that asks: Is it and will it be possible to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and colonialism without relativizing history?[14]

In 2024, he was awarded the Peace Prize of the Geschwister Korn and Gerstenmann Foundation. An abridged version of his speech was published in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.[15]
