Zhukovsky (Russian: Жуко́вский) is a city in Moscow Oblast, Russia, located on the Moskva River, 40 kilometers (25 mi) southeast of Moscow. Population: 104,736 (2010 Census);[2] 101,328 (2002 Census);[5] 100,609 (1989 Soviet census).[6]
History
editThe urban-type settlement of Stakhanovo was founded in 1935 from the dacha settlement Otdykh (literally, "Relaxation").[citation needed] It was named after Alexey Stakhanov, a famous Soviet miner. On April 23, 1947, the settlement was granted town status and renamed Zhukovsky, in honor of the pioneer of aero- and hydrodynamics Nikolay Zhukovsky.[citation needed]
Administrative and municipal status
editAdministratively, it is incorporated as Zhukovsky City Under Oblast Jurisdiction—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1] Municipally, Zhukovsky City Under Oblast Jurisdiction is incorporated as Zhukovsky Urban Okrug.[3]
Research and economy
editZhukovsky is a home to the M. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute known as LII and N. Ye. Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute known as TsAGI—they are two major facilities involved in testing and designing aircraft. These facilities were employers for a great portion of the city's population before perestroika. Also, there is situated the Aeromechanics faculty of MIPT.
There are a number smaller, but also important enterprises, such as:
- V. V. Tikhomirov Scientific Research Institute of Instrument Design (NIIP),
- Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Equipment (Научно-исследовательский институт авиационного оборудования, НИИАО, NIIAO),
- Agate Moscow Scientific Research Institute (Московский научно-исследовательский институт «Агат», Агат, Agate),
- Vladimir Myasishchev Experimental machine-building plant Myasishchev (Экспериментальный машиностроительный завод имени В.М.Мясищева, ЭМЗ, EMZ).
There are also some aviation design bureaus - Sukhoy, Ilyushin, Tupolev, etc. located in the area.
Machine-building, woodworking plants, spare parts factory, paper-mill Food industry - Inko, Nestlé, local bread-baking plant.
Sports
editZhukovsky is the center of track and field athletics in Moscow Oblast. Most notable athletes born in Zhukovsky are Yuriy Borzakovskiy, Yekaterina Podkopayeva, Andrey Yepishin, Dmitry Bogdanov, and others. In 2005, a new world class athletics stadium "Meteor" was opened.
In 2008, President Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree establishing the National Aircraft Construction Center.[7]
Tsagovsky forest
editTsagovsky forest is mixed, mostly pine forest located inside Zhukovsky and named by people after TsAGI. This forest became famous after some part of it was removed by regional authority in order to build the road that would connect M. M. Gromov Flight Research Institute and its runway to the Ural Highway.
The forest was felled overnight on the 21 March 2012 under the guard of riot and traffic police. Felling is known to happen in violation of Russian Forest code, that prohibits cutting forests inside cities. The documents for the felling are known to be a result of juridical fraud, that outlawed forest's protection status of 1982. The events triggered mass protest and involvement of the forest defense groups. The protest that turned violent on the... with 3 underage victims. Moscow region gubernator Shoigu got involved with Tsagovsky forest insisting to control its further preservation.
The plan of the road is connected to the creation of and Putin. that is недверчиво most people.

editTsagovsky forest - mixed, mostly pine forest located in Zhukovsky, Moscow region, Russia. the forest is named after the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute [TsAGI]. For the purpose of connecting Flight Research Institute and its runway with high speed Ural 5 road the forest was planned to be cut down and further privatised. The plan to remove the forest was realised afther the re-election of Vladimir Putin. The forest was removed overnight triggering mass protest. In order to protect the forest from further felling local activist set up forest-defence camp right on the snow. On the... protests turned violent and several children were injured and numbers arrested. In may the forest camp was removed by the police though the enforcement of fire-safety rules.

The removal of the forest that is located inside towns is illegal according to Russian forest code, but this was not addressed..
