Médiacité Shopping Liège is a shopping centre located near the centre of the Belgian city Liège. With brands like Primark, Zara or MediaMarkt, the mall attracts an average of 8 million visitors per year.
History
editThe complex, opened on 21 October 2009, has roughly 160,000 square metres of business, cultural and leisure space based on the theme of the audiovisual and media. The shopping centre is topped with a monumental roof designed by Ron Arad. Médiacité partly replaces the former shopping centre Longdoz, itself built on the site of an old station, Gare de Longdoz (destroyed in 1975). The other part of the site was built on the abandoned industrial site of the Englebert tyre factory.
In 2016, property developer Wilhelm & Co sold the complex to CBRE Gloval Investors Group. Gesmall, a subsidiary of the Wilhelm & Co group, continues to manage the centre.[2]
The shopping centre
editIn February 2020, the complex included:
- A shopping centre (45,313 m2, with approximately 124 shops and restaurants)
- A cluster of audiovisual and multimedia companies grouped under the name "Pôle Image de Liège"
- 2,200 parking spaces
- The entertainment branch of the national television broadcaster RTBF - Média Rives[3]
- Television and movie studios
- An ice rink called Patinoire de Liège, which opened on 8 December 2012[4]
- A coworking space[5]
There are plans to add a 6 to 8 screen cinema complex.
Médiacité and the environment
editSince its opening, Médiacité has cared a lot about the environment.[6] It includes complete waste separation, energy saving measures, and a green roof. These few points have led Médiacité to be the first Belgian shopping centre certified "Very Good" by BREEAM under the 2008 BREEAM retail standard specially developped to evaluate the environmental impact of commercial projects.
More recently, Médiacité unveiled its green roof where almost 3,000 photovoltaic panels have been installed. Thanks to this new facility, the centre is energy self-sufficient in an ecological way. This leads to a reduction of 309 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to 2,490,000 km driven by a diesel car.
Transit
editMédiacité is directly accessible from Parc de la Boverie and is linked to Liège-Guillemins railway station by a new footbridge (La Belle Liégeoise) over the Meuse.
At least 8 bus lines (TEC) offer a service of some 700 buses a day to the entrance of Médiacité. Moreover, it is possible to book a taxi directly via the centre's Info Desk.
