Hampton/Winston Salem '97 is a 7 CD box set set for release on December 6th, 2011 that contains Phish's two shows at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virgina on November 21st and 22nd, 1997, and the show they played at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina the following night, November 23, 1997. Widely regarded as one of Phish's best tours, the 1997 Fall Tour, or the "Phish Destroys America" Tour, displayed Phish experimenting with longer, funk oriented jams often extending over 20 minutes. These three shows selected to be released contain a slice of this tour.
The three shows released as part of the Hampton/Winston Salem ’97 box set have been favorites among fans of the band. Although there are fan recordings of the shows circulating among collectors, these shows have been one of the most anticipated official Phish releases. The release contains 45 tracks over the course of 8 hours of live material, containing previously unheard sound check tracks including a rendition of Jimmy Smith (musician)‘s “Back at the Chicken Shack”.
The collection begins with the Phish debut of the Rolling Stones's "Emotional Rescue", and the rest of the shows contain several other covers including "Bold as Love" and "Izabella" by Jimi Hendrix and "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group.
The shows contain many fan favorites of the band, including "Chalk Dust Torture", "AC/DC Bag", "Bathtub Gin", "Tweezer", "Mike's Song", "Run Like An Antelope", as well as a version of "Haley's Comet" which runs just under 26 minutes which was the longest version to date [1]. The band also used the two night stand in at the Hampton Coliseum to showcase newer material, "Black Eyed Katy" [2] , "Ghost", and "Dogs Stole Things"[3] which had just made their debut only a few months earlier.
