CryptoNAS is a free network-attached storage server aimed on encrypted storage. Most other free network-attached storage servers are lacking such a feature. CryptoNAS uses Linux Unified Key Setup for encryption, the password for opening the encrypted partitions is entered via a web interface (see screenshot).
Three flavors are available: a Live-CD, a live system for USB sticks and hard disks and a server package. The latest can be installed on a Debian GNU/Linux system to add the web-based frontend for harddisk encryption to an existing fileserver. [1]
The default encryption algorithm is aes-cbc-essiv:sha256, all ciphers supported by the linux kernel can be selected.[2]
Features
editCurrently only CIFS (via Samba) is supported by the live CD and live systems. Any other protocol can be added by putting the CryptoNAS server package on an already existing Debian Sever.
Trivia
editWhen the project started as a few shell scripts in 2005[3], got a web interface implemented in Perl [4] and was rewritten in Python end of 2006[5].
The project was formerly known as CryptoBox but changed it's name in 2007 due trademark conflicts[6][7]. In May 2011 the project was officially announced to be discontinued[8], but seams to be revived some weeks later as there was some activity on the mailing list again[9].
