Bri (English: Bree) is the Danish Tolkien society. Bri is Copenhagen-based and was founded in August 1996 by three members of Tolkien societies Imladris (a Danish online community) and Tolkiens Følge. The purpose of the society is for members to come together and have a good time in a Tolkienesque spirit. All members of Bri are asked to choose an alias based on Tolkien's Middle Earth, which they then proceeed to portray during get-togethers of all kinds. Many of Bri's parties require Middle Earth attire.

Bri hosts semi-annual banquets as well as various other parties, and also features several guilds that members may join if they so wish (listed here in chronological order):

  • The Governing Guild (1996), which is the decision making/administrative organ of Bri.
  • The Drinking Guild (1998), where various alcoholic beverages, as well as drinking places, are tested and rated.
  • The Hobbit Guild (1999), which purpose it is to distribute food amongst the Hobbits.
  • The Gaming Guild (????), which tests and plays all sorts of games, mainly card, board- and role playing games.
  • The Older Races' Food Guild (2001), which was created to ensure that all Elves, Men, Dwarves and Orcs could partake of food and drink without having to share it with the notoriously gluttonous Hobbits.
  • Bri by Night (2002), for those of an evil persuasion.
  • The Arda Guild (2003), which is for the more serious discussions about Tolkien's World.
  • The Archery Guild (2009), complete with muffins, tea and Middle Earth costumes.

There is an annual member fee, currently of 200 DKK/calendar year. For those who live far away from Copenhagen and cannot be active, but still wish to be members of Bri and get a change to participate in certain activities, a "wanderer" membership can be established for 75 DKK. Bri regularly publishes a membership magazine called Pipeurten (English: Pipeweed) that is available to members and wanderers both.

Bri regularly participates in events involving other Tolkien societies, such as banquets, conventions and the recent Tolkien Concert in Copenhagen, featuring sir Christopher Lee as storyteller. To contact Bri, send an e-mail to brikontakt @ bri . dk (without the spaces).
