Montage is a Jazz Band in Hong Kong, founded in 2005 by Xiao See and Pierre Lien who went to the same school. Initially set up as a cover band in 2005, the band had no name then, and their members were different every time, though all of them consists of Xiao and Pierre. In 2006, a special performance led to a instant boom of fame, and the members thought of the name Montage as the band name.
History
edit(2005 - 2006) Cover Band years
edit2005 was the year of Graduation of both Xiao and Pierre as a F.5 student in St.Stephen's College. It was then when Xiao suggested forming a Party band so they they could play some Jazz songs during their Graduation Dinner. Morgan, in the same school as Xiao and Pierre were, joined in and thus forming the very basic structure of the band. Knowing that 3 people is not enough for a big party band, they recruited a few members of an outside band that Xiao and Morgan joined. The band had no name then, so people only refer them to as "the band". The Graduation Night was a complete success.
In September 2006, Xiao and Pierre returned to St.Stephen's College for their studies in F.6. The band first helped out in a Musical demonstration for Freshmen. Qin, younger brother of Xiao's, joined in and helped out as well. This is the time when the band shape began to solidify.
In December 2006, the band was needed to perform Christmas songs in the campus of the school. The band willingly accepted the invitation, and performed Christmas songs to every one at school. The band began to catch traces of fame in their performances, and started to be notable throughout the campus.
(2006 -2007) Montage
editThe name Montage came from a short performance video featuring the band. It was late at night when Xiao, Pierre and Morgan began to feel bored and decided to record some videos for pure interest. They decided not to reveal themselves on the video, but blacking out the screen would cause boredom to viewers, so they decided to cover their heads with their clothings. They covered two songs, In the rain and Forever in Love, both originally by Kenny G.
When they viewed their video, they thought it was great and started thinking of a name for the band. The name "蒙頭樂隊" was suggested (Meaning "Covered Head Band" in English).
蒙頭 is pronounced "Mong Tau" in Cantonese, and Montage sounded quite similar to it, so the band decided to call the band Montage.
(2007) Performance outside the campus, LaMa Era
editUp till 2007, Montage had never ventured outside the campus for a performance. This was broken when Morgan received an invitation from his community centre. They were notified that they could play a gig in the centre. Motivated by the invitation, Montage began to practice for their performance. Though still covering songs, Montage twisted the feeling of the original song, hoping to create a sense of freshness in their performance. They have covered famous love songs such as Can you feel the love tonight (by Elton John and Tim Rice), several songs by Kenny G and Ready to take a chance again by Barry Manilow. They also performed their very first song written by themselves, called LaMa.
(2007 - ) After LaMa
editAfter the LaMa era, Montage continued their spirit and practiced for gigs to be played at the Graduation dinner. Unfortunately, in a band practice, he did too much drugs and was overdosed. Later, he was deceased.
After the death of Qin, Justin came around and joined the band. They have created their very first single, titled MONTAGE. The featured single was a redone of the song LaMa.
