This is a discussion about wether the '98 home run chase between McGwire and Sosa is worthy of a Wikipedia article. I think it is a historical event in Baseball that is worthy of an article. I would like this to start of as just people listing reasons for and reasons against. Thanks! 02:17, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Reasons for
edit- It was one of the most prominent sports stories in the last twenty five years.
- As a lengthy cultural event it is worth going into in great detail, but such detail is not possible on the individual player pages.
- Many commentators put into a larger cultural context, crediting with saving baseball (along with Ripken's streak), restoring national innocence, all that jazz.

Reasons against
edit- The article will simply become a lightning rod for controvery, as there are currently many people who believe that the whole thing was invalid and shameful because "Both were using illegal performance enhancing drugs." There may still be too much retroactive outrage at the event for the article to survive.
- The urge to add a massive 'controversy' section, in order to handle the current negative views of the event, might make the homerun chase itself a footnote to an article on the steroid controversy.
