Barry Charles Moore (March 18, 1941 - August 18, 2015) was an applied economist and Fellow of Downing College, Cambridge.[1]
Academic career
editIn 1968, Moore became a research assistant to Maurice Peston, Baron Peston at Queen Mary College in the University of London.[2] He was a researcher in the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge from 1970 to 1985. In 1979, he became director of studies for economics at Downing. In 1985, he co-founded Public and Corporate Economic Consultants and moved to the Department of Land Economy as assistant director of research, later becoming a Reader in 2003.[1] He was a founder in 1988 of the Centre for Business Research[2] and taught at the Institute of Economic and Political Studies.[1] In 2005 he became an editor of the newly launched journal Spatial Economic Analysis.[3] He was an Emeritus Fellow of Downing from 2008.[2]
He had an interest in regional policy and was a member of the Cambridge Economic Policy Group in the 1970s.[1] Moore's work studied deindustrialisation and used econometrics.[2] He advised national and international NGOs, including the OECD for 10 years,[4] government departments, and Parliamentary committees.[2]
Personal life and education
editMoore was born in March 1941 at Ruskin College in Oxford to Rena (nee Vandersteen) and Charles Moore. He attended Beal Grammar School and then received a BSc (1965) and Master's degree (MSc, 1968) at The London School of Economics before studying for another Master's (MA, 1972) at Cambridge University. He married Leslie Simm in 1966 and they had three daughters.[1] He knew Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud in Soho, where he was a club member.[2] He died of a heart attack in Italy in August 2015.[1][2]
