Development

[edit source]

Series creator Michael Schur's initial vision of the afterlife in The Good Place was a universe of multiple seperate realms with a shared feature. He originally envisioned the feature as a kiosk that contained all knowledge in the universe, before deciding to make it a person to make it more interesting.[1]

Gender and species

[edit source]

Janet (and by extension the other Janets) use She/her pronouns, although she is not a woman. Janet is frequently misgendered by the cast as female, and misinterpreted as a robot or person. Whenever this happens, she corrects them, saying "not a girl", "not a robot" or "not a person".[2] In the season four episode "Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy", the lack of a correction from Janet on her gender was the giveaway that she had been replaced with a Bad Janet.[2][3]

A.E. Osworth, writing for Autostraddle, considers Janet to be a form of non binary representation. Osworth noted that "not correcting someone when they fundamentally misunderstand your whole jam is coded as "bad" while a friendly, firm and sometimes frustrated assertion of one's own identity is coded as — well, not good exactly".[2]

Reception

[edit source]

When prompted by TV Guide to rank all of the different forms of Janet she played, Carden considered all of the Janets to be "part of her soul"
