Research Impact is used in evaluating the Research Excellence Framework which is being developed in the UK to evaluate academic institutions.[1] This work has emphasised the need for more engagement with the general public and the increase of number of case studies that undertook a interdisciplinary approach.[1]

It is related to impact factor” which is a quantitative measure of the number of times a particular journals have their papers cited in other literature.[2] Journals like "Nature" or the Lancet have a high impact factor. These journals are considered more reliable.
Case studies
editThe Research-impact.org team at Loughborough University's Business and Economic School have been experimenting with crowdfunding to increase the university's researchers' public engagement.[3]....
Researchers on the Zooniverse project have used thousands of volunteers as additional researchers to evaluate millions of pictures of galaxies.[4]
