Arguments for the notability of Puget Systems

Google hits (as of July 14, 2008)

Puget Systems – 2,420,000 hits. It’s a very broad search term – the first six pages of results are almost all for us, after that it’s a mixture of us and other Puget Sound area businesses (mostly health care and utilities).

Puget Custom Computers – 66,300 hits (Previous company name - changed early this year.)

Puget Deluge – 32,0900 hits

Puget Mineral Oil Computer – 12,800 hits

YouTube video of the Mineral Oil computer – 946,680 views in ~1 year. Not sure if this counts toward notability or not.

Product reviews

WP:CORP states that “A primary test of notability is whether people independent of the subject itself (or of its manufacturer, creator, or vendor) have actually considered the company, corporation, product or service notable enough that they have written and published non-trivial works that focus upon it.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but my impression is that for some products, reviews are plenty to establish notability – three independent reviews of XYZ kitchen gadget is enough for it to have a Wikipedia article. It’s more complicated for Puget because of the size and custom nature of the product. Puget works with reviewers to provide the kind of computer they’d like to see, and lend it to them for a time. Sometimes reviewers approach Puget to ask for a computer to review, sometimes Puget approaches them. Because of this necessary cooperation, it looks a bit like advertising and I’ve seen some wikipedians resist using product reviews as a means of establishing notability.

I understand their hesitation, but I believe these product reviews meet the WP:CORP criteria because the reviewers are an independent party that has chosen to give Puget their attention. They have to publish material that is interesting and significant to their readers, the same as any news outlet, and sort through a great deal of stuff they don’t consider interesting enough to make the cut. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement – Puget gets attention, they get something interesting to attract readers – but this is the same across all forms of media. They’ve come to the conclusion that Puget is “notable enough that they have written and published non-trivial works that focus upon it”.
