The Albums Chart is a weekly record chart based on album sales from Sunday to Saturday; it was published for the first time on the week ending April 3, 1960. Prior to 1960 there was no official albums chart. During the decade, a total of 45 albums reached number one. The most successful artist of the 1960s was the English band The Beatles, who topped the Albums Chart for 190 weeks with thirteen different albums. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, their eighth studio album, was the biggest-selling album of 1967 and the biggest-selling of the decade. The first number-one album of the 1960s was the compilation Elvis' Gold Records, Volume 2, by American singer and actor Elvis Presley, while the final number one was Led Zeppelin II (1969), the second album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin.
